I prefer the lab style tubs that have the bottle holder and food hopper built into the wire top.

10 gals work fine too just a bit more work to clean them, but you can house a good size colony in a 10 gal.

Cheap ghetto way? I buy 56 qt tubs from Walmart($6). These tubs are taller but work well for me. I melt a row of a couple hundred holes around the top two inches of the walls(I counted them....melting is boring work). I cut a 8X10 rectangle out of the lid and cover it with a peice of quarter inch hardware clothe or the base grate from a parakeet cage or whatever is mouseproof and hot glue gun it over the rectangle, sometimes duct tape it there. Hang water bottle with usual hanger. Food is an issue. I am a 'by feel' person that feeds on the floor of the cage. You could use the rectangle in the top to put in a food hopper. Your call.

I would put a 1.5 in a ten gallon. But be ready to clean it out often when the babies are bigger and it is wall to wall.
I will see about picts. and post later. My arguement for a tub besides the low cost is the total ease to clean. Tanks are heavy and crack and you gotta buy a lid. The tubs have the initial work to retrofit but then are so much easier to work with. I tend to put 1. 7 in them.

Back in the day (pre-rack system) I had a bunch of these cut down (half height) 10 gallons with home made lids. They worked great, unfortunately I only have pics of the rat version but you get the idea, need smaller hardware cloth.

Cracking is not really an issue since they don't need to be water tight. Any cracks got clear packaging tape applied both inside and outside. As long as all the pieces were there and not affecting the structure, the tape worked fine.
