humidifier

dynomite May 01, 2007 06:54 PM

ok, so when i built his cage i built with a large water reservoir, which he loved and with an airstone and a waterfall in there humidity was perfect. however, i moved and i can no longer bring a hose to clean/change the water frequently enough and i had to get rid of that. since then humidity has dropped too much and i need to find a better way to provide it until i can work out a better system to get his pond up and running, since it is a 6 by 5 by 3 ft cage commercial herp humidity products are pointless, so i was thinking of buying a humidifier for his cage. can any of you tell me of any problems that might arise from that that you can think of? i would deffinitely buy the one that suits his cage the most (safety and ability for him to mess things up or hurt himself). he is a rough neck monitor by the way.
thanks for your input!

Hello Dynomite,
It sounds like your problem is a structural one(bad seal) and not for the lack of the other things that you mentioned. Properly moistened substrate and a sealed cage produces plenty of humidity in my enclosures. Try an archive search on this topic. Best to you- Mike

yeah, i know, but i'm a college student and i do not have enough free time or money to build a new enclosure, and the entire idea behind this cage is that i can take it appart and put it back together for moving around. hence i can't exactly do that which is why i am looking for alternative options rather than conventional ones. i know i will fix this problem, i was just looking for input on the solution that i am currently entertaining.
thanks,
jake

Hello Jake,
Well, in that case, I say that your solution (if you want to call it that) sucks... No offense, I want what is good for the lizard, not you... I thought you were trying to remedy what was bad for the lizard's sake. Forgive me for offering a second hand of advice, but wrap the cage in visqueen, poly green house plastic or even saran wrap- it's cheap- fix your humidity(you don't need a pond, bubbler or mister to achieve the solution.) Best to you- Mike

that monitor is a timor, i think, post more pics.

dynomite May 01, 2007 08:57 PM

you are correct, that is a timor, i do not have any rudi pics uploaded like i thought i did... i clicked on a timor pic by mistake, but it's kind of a cool picture right? he was part of a trade for my roughneck.

a humidifier won't do anything but deposit mineral scale everywhere. limit your venting, use a proper substrate. if you can't provide a proper setup, you should reconsider keeping the animal.

Sell your monitor like everybody else who goes to college and buy a pacman frog. This way I can buy a cheap monitor and you can have a herp and everybody is happy.

duct tape and tin foil go a long way and under $10!

dynomite May 02, 2007 04:52 PM

thank you for mentioning something that is not blatantly obvious to anyone that has ever kept an animal. i think you're on to something here, and i can still make it aestheticaly pleasing, at least more than a machine being in there. thanks a lot.

Silicone caulk is easy to cut when you need to take the enclosure apart. It will cut right down the middle.
