Feeding a CH female her first meal?

beclende May 02, 2007 12:46 PM

I just got my second Ball yesterday, she is a CH female and she has not yet had her first meal. What do I feed her when she is this size. I do not have access to live mice hoppers or rat pups, only adults. Will frozen work for a first meal? Thanks for any help. She is set up and has been soaked to hydrate and looks great, just want to know what to feed her in a couple of days.

I've got to tell you, I think its going to be tough. I've never been able to get hatchlings to take PK or FT for a first meal. Live hopper mice for the confident and agressive babies, and live "crawler" mice for the more skittish. "Crawlers" are what I call the stage between Fuzzies and hoppers, where the babies have their eyes open and are able to crawl around, but not jump. Some babies are intimidated by the wild movements of a hopper and will not take them at first. Also, dark colored mice are far better than white. I've had many over the years that would not take white (I also keep my babies on white paper towels...maybe that was part of the problem), but pound other colors. After 3 or 4 meals they can take adult mice, and start the transistion to FT. At this stage I've found them to be very easy to transition...

Hey thanks for the reply. My new addition is eating as I type. I just went ahead and got her the smallest adult mouse I could find. (21/2" from nose to butt) I dangled it in front of her live then prekilled and immediately put the mouse back in front of her and whack! I am sooo excited! I have had incredible luck with my first two animals thus far and I couldn't be happier with this new girl. I will post pics once she is settled a little better. Everyone have a good day and as good of luck with thier new CH babies as I have!

All of mine have fed except for the two I went into the snake room and looked into my vision tub to see how they were all doing and they where all moving around some were even in their water bowls I will wait another four days before I attempt to feed the two balls that did not feed yet and the way it looks they are alot more comfortable now roaming around their tubs.
