Pacman owners help!!!! Big problem

johnnyblazekfd Aug 14, 2003 03:10 PM

When I got home today, I went to check on my frogs and my juv. albino has something really wrong with him. He has something sticking out of his butt. It looks like major hemorroids or something. Lately, Ive noticed that he looks pretty swelled and sorta translucent whenever he soaks in his waterbowl, almost as if hes filling up like a water balloon. I use the dechlorinated water that I use for my larger pac and hes never had a problem with it. Well today he looks pretty swelled again and it looks as if he got so swelled that some of his insides just popped out of his butt hole and now their hanging there. The frog is acting normal and everything, hes still hopping around and hes biting at my finger, but he has this about 1/2-34" pink bubble hanging behind him. Anybody know whats going on? Is there any way to save him or is he going to die? I've read all my pac books and I cant find nothing that sounds similar to this and Ive never had experience with or even heard of something like this. I'll try to get a pic if I can. Thanks, any help would be greatly appreciated.

It is a prolapse. Could be from some sort of deficiency. Get it to a vet. Not anything to be overly concerned with but def. something to watch. Keep him on clean papertowels and keep him warm and just slightly damp until you can get him to a vet. Andy

I agree with Andy get him to the vet to see why he's prolapsed and get him fixed up.

i saw this in a wild American toad once, we went to the vet to have it checked out. It's probly an infection or vitamin def. of some sort

You described a prolapse, and this requires immediate veterinary care ASAP. This is serious, because the chances of this happening again is quite high unless the root causes are identified and corrected.

This can result from vitamin deficiencies, impaction, parasite overload and various obscure causes. What kind of substrate is it on, and what do you feed it?

If you can't go to a vet for some time, try using a wet q-tip to GENTLY push it back in. If it doesn't want to go in, drive faster.

I have been feeding it crickets and the occasional pinky. Ive only had it for like 2 weeks and they said it was eating healthy on crickets and mealworms and it looked like a normal healthy frog. As soon as I bought him, whenever I found him in his waterbowl, he looked pretty swollen and translucent, almost as if he was full of water. Today it looks like the got so swollen that it pushed out his rectum. I read in a book of a water edema syndrome that is eventually fatal, could this be it? Does anybody elses frog look swollen after sitting in its water bowl?

I just got my pacman last sunday from a man who fed him pretty much nothing but pinkies, and some crickets. So tuessday night im doing my usual rounds, checking on everyone, feeding them, etc. And i see this ENORMOUS pink thing coming out the pacmans butt. and hes hopping all over trying to shoo it off of him. So I'm watching him,and thinking hes having a prolapse and im having a cow wondering how im gonna pay the $50 vet visit fee bill, and the pink thing fell out of him! He was just pooping out a pinkie. the thing was as big as my thumbnail, maybe bigger. So maybe its not a prolapse and hes just shooting out a pinkie?

I really would not feel any more relieved if you saw a food item passed through the digestive system being completely undigested. If $50 is difficult for you to come up with, and is a deterrent from getting an animal properly treated, you should seriously reevaluate your ability to take care of a living animal. No one will ever lie to you and tell you that an animal will never have to go to the vet and its will never cost you any more money than food. Taking an animal to a vet and spending $100 on its is an absolute given and will be required at least once through the animals lifespan. In fact, when I tell people about the costs associated with keeping a reptile or amphibian, I always tell them to save $100 or more that should be dedicated solely to the veterinary treatment of that animal, even if it only cost $15 to begin with. This IS the responsibility of keeping a live animal.

OK, please don't jump to conclusions. I never there said he passed out a full pinkie. It was huge,it was pink, but it most definately was digested,i picked it apart with a stick to make sure all was cool, and that i could see no worms or anything. Yeh, its gross but whatever. And please, dont give me the responsibility speech. dont talk down to me like that, like im that clueless. And sorry,i dont knwo where you all are from, but the only herp vet in my area cost $50 just for a visit. If it is completely necessary ill go, but passing a huge poop, that i know what was from, is not getting $50 just for me to be told what i already know. If it is completely necessary,I will take them to the vet,and i have done so for my WTF before. But i dont feel the need to answer to someone i dont know. I do know what im doing, and dont need that.

I am glad we are on the same page.
You gave me reason to jump to conclusions because you were worried about the $50 for a vet!

Don't forget, only 25% of the people that read this forum actually post. This post (as with most of my others) may not be entirely directed towards the person I am replying to. I am hoping to instill some morals into some of the other people who read this forum. I have gotten into discussions on the turtle forums with people who have no problem with having a baby turtle suffer to death and then just get another one, than to get it properly treated. I despise that mentality and do everything I can combat it.
