blizzard king (background questions?)

kirkpatrick May 02, 2007 07:22 PM

I just acquired two females hets and I was told they were Lemke line blizzards. Which they said were arizona desert king and mexican black king. They also said they purchased there breeding pair from Isis reptiles, so I contacted Isis who said they were from cal kings, Davis county I believe she said, But then Lemke bred his blizzard into a mexican black to make hets. Does that sound right? Also does anyone here work with these? Kerby maybe? Thanks in advance for any help.

I got my Blizzards from Shannon Brown a few years back. You will have to ask Shannon where he got them from.

My Blizzards are cal kings. I have bred my Blizzards to quite a few cal kings...and nothing but cal kings have came out. I have heard that theory as well that Blizzards are nothing but albino Mexican Black Kings...but that simply is not the case (at least with mine).

And for terminology, there are no cal kings het for Blizzard. They can be double hets (albino & hypermelanistic-Mendota-Davis). Just like in corn snakes. A corn snake cannot be het for Snow, but is actually a double het (anery & amel). To say that a corn snake is het Snow would assume that if you bred a Snow to a normal, then all the babies would be het Snow..and that is not true. All the babies would be double hets (anery and amel). So in cal kings you CANNOT buy a cal king that is het for Blizzard...in fact if you breed a Blizzard to a normal cal king, then all the babies would be normal looking and they would be double hets (albino & hypermelanistic).

Last year I bred a Blizzard to a Mendota and produced ALL hypermelanistics (that are 100% het albino). "IF" my Blizzard was an albino MBK, then I wouldn't have produced any Mendotas/hypermelanistics.

Now, I was planning on getting a MBK and breeding it to an albino cal king and then breed back the babies to see what would come out....but since I bred my Blizzard to a Mendota last year and produced Mendotas......na...waste of time.

I do have some Splendidas (hypos, albinos & axanthics).

Kerby,
Mine were from B.H.B and when I talked to him he told me they were the product of amel cal kings x natida Baja cal kings.
The adult pair I had you could just faintly make out that one was striped and the other was thin banded. The babies I produced were totally patternless.

Then the Nitida/Baja and the Mendota gene is the same recessive gene. I have produced Blizzards from my double hets (albino & Mendota).

This year I bred a Mendota to a Davis to see if those are the same gene (I believe they are).

The ones I got from you appear to be solid white as adults but when taken outside in the sunlight I can see faint yellow banding. Beautiful none-the-less!

On Blizzards you can't see the pattern around the head.

Your pictures show the head pattern.

So what is it?

Albino Bananas look like that.

The pic is a little misleading as its white in person but the camera pics up a bit of yellow. Its sold white in person and that why I purchased it as a blizzard. The guy who sold it to me is an experienced breeder so that what I thought it was.

I have a blizzard right now... No pattern. Though it's not weird for them to have a faint pattern...

I say breed it to a melanistic and see what you get...

If you get melanistics, it's a blizzard.
