Hibernated hatchlings

jack May 02, 2007 08:43 PM

Last fall my new hatchling would not eat. So after 2 months of trying I gave up and hibernated them outside. The fist 2 came up last week and now all 6 are up. They do seem “light” when I pick them up. They have not eaten anything that I know of yet. It’s still getting cold at night. But I think that once the weather warms up a little more they will start to eat.

They could be dehydrated. Give each of them a soaking in a shallow dish of tepid water and offer small earthworms after they warm up. If the daytime temps are getting in the 70's and the nighttime temps above the 50's, they should be eating. Be sure to keep their area moist and protect them from birds like crows, bluejays and other birds that eat small animals.

The tempeture is still getting down to the low 40s at night, and only the 60s during the day. The forcast thought is for 80 degrees by the end of the week. I have soaked them. They will stay in there water dish for up to 1/2 hour befor climbing out.
