Can Ball Pythons ovulate TWICE?

VDR May 03, 2007 09:54 AM

Hello.
My largest female had what appeared to be two ovulations. Is this possible? Here are the details.............

3/23 first "ovulation"
4/06 ovulation.....(the pictures are showing this ovulation)
4/18 opaque
4/23 SHED

Now, from the first suspected ovulation to the shed date is about 30 days.....close enough to being right.

But, the pics show what must be an ovution on 4/06....she was HUGE....she could barely move. However, the SHED came just 2 weeks after the 4/06 ovulation.

So, based on the post-ovulation shed date of 4/23, 3/23 must have been an ovulation and 4/06 must have been an ovulation because of her size......so this leads me to believe that she had two ovulations.

What do you think.....possible??

Thanks.
Brian

what you observed on 3/23 was just her swelling before ovulating. Those pics are an obvious ovulation, from 4/6. There's no set time frame between ovulation and shedding, so the 30 day thing is not a factor. You saw her swelling and then 2 weeks or so later, actually ovulating. Just wishful thinking back on 3/23. I did it all season myself. Congratulations. You have eggs on the way.

To me the first pic is an ovulation. The second pic is not. The increased size could be just her egg growth and development. Pre-lay sheds are general guidelines and can very from animal to animal. If I see an ovulation... I usually go with 51 days post ovutation (+/- a couple of days) as my lay date. Soooo, I'd watch for eggs around 5/13/07 (+/- a couple of days).

Good Luck

The bulge appears less intense this time. She is slowly building towards egg lay - I think.

If you look at her belly at this point, you should be able to see the egg outlines by now, without palpating (sp?) her.

I bet shes starting to coil up on the hot end real nice and tight, with the substrate all cleaned away beneath her?

Youre almost there!

Good luck.

Boas ovulate twice, at least according to Jeff Ronne, the Boaphile. I have often seen what I thought to be two ovulations in ball pythons.

I label a female in the first pictures condition swelling.

You are correct, the second picture is your actual ovulation.

Be prepared for the eggs to be layed on or around May 23.

Good Luck!
