When to pull?

senorsnake May 03, 2007 02:44 PM

Tofu and Gobball had been breeding nonstop for about the last month, but activity has ceased between them for a little over a week.I didn't witness ovulation, but my understanding is that you don't usually catch it in BRBs like you do BCI. So I was wondering, what are the signs that they are done? I'm planning on leaving them together for another week before putting Gobball in with Larva anyway, but I was just wondering if there were any tell-tale signs?

I tend to group breed so like you I don't usually see ovulation, sometimes I don't even catch courting let alone copulation. Mine have quit all activity for several weeks now. I tweaked up the temps a bit and they moved around but no courting. I'm certain all my breeding is done and I will soon close off all the access pipes and settle in for the wait. Most gravid females will be larger in last two thirds of the body. Llook for thermoregulation, laying in wierd positions and either conserving or trying to get rid of heat. If the male is ignoring her she's not putting off those wonderful sweet smells he likes so much. I'd move him soon. You could miss the window on the other female. Maybe already have. Is definately towards the end of my breeding season and living in CA and having to wait for cooler temps, I usually have a late season.

My cages with access pipes between sections I use only for breeding:

The pipes don't really show but are on the sides and can link the cage sections.

Those are squat fish bowls, work great for water dishes. Large enough for two BRB's and still room for water. The left hand bowl does have two full grown BRB's while the right hand one only has a single adult.

most snakes like confined spaces, I have a 17 tiger reticulated python in a 6 by 4 by 18" enclosure. The snake crams himself in the corner cause in my opinion he likes the security of the sides of enclosure, and also every snake I ever used a "hide box" with, spent most of their time in the box, even the diurnal racers I used to keep used them by opposite times, at night in the box, by day roaming about.

I keep all my empty paper towel cardboard rolls for some of my smaller colubrids. I use mostly cardboard, but also used various items from the Home Depot, lots of interesting hides in that store, easy to clean, and not charged an arm and a leg for a hide.

foot monster Frank? What you feeding her guineas or rabbits? Do you catch that pick of J. Lavelle's jungle forums.kingsnake.com/view.php?id=1301564,1301564 oohlalahhh Drop dead gorgeous to say the least. I would give your right arm for that snake Yeah I think snakes like small hides for that comfort and/or secure feeling and mine love to squinch in places they can't fit either

This is Charlie Murphy aka "Darkness" right after he ate a small hopper and is by far my ugliest brb and this is his light color too but has great white walls I would have to say but this pic was taken real early in the morning right before sunrise so they are gone. I took him off a local breeder cuz no one wanted him (got him for free) and gave him a good home. I got him at about 15 inches or so and real skinny like a corn snake which is part of the reason I wanted him cuz he didn't look healthy at all. He is now at about 26-29 inches still skinny as hell and has always had funny eating ways. I know his routine now, he will constrict and wait for at least 10 minutes to start eating. If he sees light he won't eat, if there is anymovement he won't eat and that 10 minute rule starts over again if any of those happen but I love him and I wouldn't trade his ugly a$$ for any of Dave's beautiful normals cuz we have history together and that goes along way with me
Bob

FRoberts May 04, 2007 06:58 PM

actually the 17 footer is a male tiger retic and a little lean machine not a monster female, and yes I saw that jungle jag, I only have a "reg" Coastal male carpet, but he's a beautiful animal in his oqn right. As for ugly snakes, I want an elephant trunk snake, someday I get one and an ugly ass Budget's frog lol

Of all the northern black racers I have caught, I only caught one in an open field, most where caught under some artificial cover or in a bryer (ssp?) patches (sticker bushes), metal car doors and hoods are a favorite spot in my areas. And also under tarps. I also caught this under a tarp with a black racer in the 90's. NJ has the prettiest box turtles I have ever seen, very colorful and I have caught Black Racers as long as 6 feet, I saw one someone caught in Forked river it eas 6.5 feet, I never caught one that big, average length is 4 foot.

There was tons of cover in that open field...as well as a supply of frogs to munch on. Surprisingly I found nothing but frogs in a breeding pond as well as a snapper most likely there to eat the tadpoles. People told me I went at the wrong time of day. I was hoping that I should have guaranteed found one lol. Maybe next time if I ever get to see that field again...
