Are UVB lights harmful to Leo Geckos?

Flavia Guimaraes May 03, 2007 11:38 PM

I have a 4 years old leo gecko (jungle color) and until a few months ago she was doing great. But lately she doesnt want to open her eyes and i wonder what is the reason because i didnt change her husbandry.I do not think her eyes problem is diet related.Although the eyes look perfect, no sign of infection, she hesitates to open them like she cant tolerate lights anymore. The only idea i may have is that i exposed her to artificial UV lights. Are UVB/A lights harmful to Leo Geckos?

No, I have allready used PC's for display use with some Leo set ups. They will hide from it during the day allmost all day then comeing out at night like they naturaly do. But I never had any problems with them getting to much UV from any lights, it is not needed seeing on how they are nocturnal.

But it wont hurt them, they will just hide pluss unlike most other geckos they have eye lids.

I assume you have a dish of calcium in the cage? If so good if not use one, dust the crickets with the opposit. Dust them with vitamins. Use a good vitamin fortified eye solution on the Leo and see if this helps. Is it albino? I have had plenty of albinos with problems like puss but regardless albinos have sensitive eyes. Another is maybe it got some calcium or depending on the substrate, dust in its eyes. For this the solution should be of help.

I never gave her vitamins, what i do is i raise her insects on baby cereal fortified with vitamins. NESTUM.Do you think i need extra vitamins + the vitamins that already exist in the baby cereal?
She looks great but she only opens her eyes after i wash them with water. She keeps them open for a few minutes then she closes them again.I ll put some cold liver oil in a small bowl for her to lick.

What do you do to protect your albino's eyes?
