It partly depends on the size of the snake. The larger the snake the more things it will perceive as a meal instead of a threat. In defensive mode, the snake may bite the cat and not constrict...in feeding mode, the cat is doomed. Remember, a snake will kill something before it discovers it is too large to eat. Bottom line, if the snake is hungry the cat had better hide very very well.
I do not believe that you can socialize snakes. They are never NEVER truly tame. They are creatures of instinct. You can condition them to a small degree to be calmer...but if some stimuli triggers an instictive response then you have to live with the consequences.
