Cages and Housing Questions.....what else??

medussa Aug 14, 2003 04:29 PM

Cage Material:
Because we have pythons.....large ones.....we need to redo our caging. The aquarium thing gets very old maintenance-wise....and have considered Melamine ( heavy) or Exp. PVC Foam. The PVC would appear to be the way to go but have not seen any cage construction plans or pics. Would like to use something other than tempered glass for sliding doors to keep costs down.......any suggestions? Would like to be able to just crank out a low cost cage if needed in custom sizes & have them be stackable /lightweight.

Rack Housing:
I am still at the stage where I feel bad for a snake that doesnt have a nice cage and nice set up....but know that if I want to add to my collection i need to modify practices. For instance, i have been using substrate and know this is impractical during feeding and fecal clean up.....Also, I am sure a rack system is easier to maintain a large collection.....but how do you house a full grown Red tail in a rack? Is it possible to put high humidity snakes like a blood python in a rack...how would you handle misting? Was thinking maybe custom made "drawers" in melamine, place a tub in there with heat tape at the back panel, gliding drawer slides like in a tool box??? Any thoughts on this subject would be great!

Thanks in Advance!

im currently designing my own rack system with sliding drawers, for slightly larger snakes, namely carpet pythons, timor pythons, bloods, and several others, im sure theyd work for boas, red tail or otherwise. my one huge concern was the weight, i had originally considered "glass" fronted melamine drawers, but too heavy. currently im leaning towards expanded pvc sheeting, its lightweight, pretty inexpensive and moisture resistant. which is good for me cuz i have humidity concerns, not so much from the snakes, but i live in ny, about an hour from manhattan, and you betcha i didnt have power last night! but at this time of year especially, its HUMID, right now it feels like im sitting in indonesia, which is great for all of the snakes i keep, since i really only keep indonesian pythons. im thinking out the rest of the rack design, but when i have a more complete plan ill start drawing stuff up.

one of the first things I thought about when the blackout happened.....what about all the reptiles???

Your plan sounds good...Would be very interested to see how that goes as I have Carpets and bloods, etc. My main concern on humidity is the bloods.....

I wonder how Bob Clark cages Fluffy???

Let us all know how it works out!
