Amazing differences in Leo personalities

powergeckos May 21, 2003 03:20 PM

It constantly amazes me the difference in leo personalities. This one pictured was both curious and highly docile right out of the egg. I have others that are nasty and wild all the time - no matter how much I try to calm them down.

I guess that's what makes them so fun, huh?

Is that one of your melanistic offspring. It looks like it will have quite a bit of spotting as it gets older. Looks like a keeper!!!

that's the one that started out looking llike a snow. I'm not keeping any of these - because they aren't dark enough. To be melanistic, they need to have a very dark wash to them as well, in my opinion.

She is cute though - and like I said before, just a terrific personality, right out of the shell.

So Monte have you created any you consider melanistic yet? I had one weird gecko hatched out last year with a strange dark tint all over. It still has a bit of that dark tint but it also has hypo genes so it has lots of spots, just really little ones. So its this weird dullish greenish orange color mainly now, doesn't look like any special morph really just kind of odd. I posted a photoessay of her color development above.

She's het albino and gravid, it will be interesting to see if the albinos she produces look any different than the others.

Good luck with your melanistic project, good melanistics seem almost as hard to come by as nice snows.

. . . but I still have a TON of eggs in the incubator, cooking low and slow.

Everything is turning out to look like the father- he has strong genes I guess.

At what temp are you incubating?? I would try to go as low as possible without killing the eggs. Maybe 79-80?? I am not sure how low you can go though.

I am incubating around 80-82. I'm not sure if the reverse is true - lower temp = more melanin. We just know that high heat means less.

Thanks for the help though. I hope something comes about.

According to the studies in the LGM I recall seeing, yes, more melanin cooler inc. temps, less in higher. I don't think you can say that there is any "true" natural amount of melanin, I think it is more of a range that each animal is capable of genetically which is static, what is variable is where on the range the trait is expressed. I suppose mid-range would be average...

i gotta agree. i have some geckos that arent content til they get "loved" on or handled (paid attention to). I have blizzards which are very nervouse and agressive and then yet still i have some extremely wild flighty geckos that never tame..... i have two tremper het females wild as a march hare... but i love them ass the same and accept them for what they are
