Pastel Crystal Ball

Python Dreams May 04, 2007 03:55 PM

Whenever I try and shoot photos of the Crystals they run for cover! So I decided to snap a couple photos today after they fed last night to see if they would mellow out... Worked a bit and I really like how this shot of the Pastel Crystal turned out. He is nearing 500 grams and is mind boggling in person!
Let me know what you think,

You can see in the photo how the male is on the move and working his way into a circle... It was kinda funny to see him go into a perfect circle and then keep inching his way around the circle. Here is a shot I took that wouldve been great but for some reason the lighting would not agree with me...

Wow those are awesome snakes and photos.

I know what you mean about them never staying still long enough to get good photos. Mine seem to be less active during the day so I try and get the pictures then..but I have to be fast, as once they have a few minutes to 'wake up' they are on the prowl.

how is this morph produced?

RandyRemington May 05, 2007 09:51 AM

The known part is that there is a single pastel gene from one parent and a single mojave gene from one parent (may or may not be the same parent).

The new part is what appears to be a single copy of one more gene that the mother of the original crystal has which combines with mojave to make crystal. I'm not sure if that last gene has a name yet and I don't think Tom is sharing pictures of the mother with that gene. Perhaps breeding results this year will shed some more light on this new gene but my guess is that it's another allele in the white snake complex, perhaps something like phantom.

A good test of the allele part will be to see if a crystal male bred to a normal can produce 25% more crystals or only a 50/50 split mojave's and carriers of the new gene (no babies that get both or neither).

Hmmmmm - what do i think?

I think they are fabulous and I am sure that at least one of them wants to come live with me

Ditto what Tosha said, except I think it wants to live with me, not her
