well, to start it off with, i'm 16, and wanted to get into breeding boas as a hobby. i have had an adult pair for, about a year and a half now. the male is a nice normal, and the female is highly abberant and of a completely different color. well, i kept them separate for quite some time, and at one point, my female looked bigger, so i put the male in. he went pretty nuts, but i didnt see any exact interest in the female, so i left them together for a week or two. i never once saw anything even relatively close to copulation. so i took him out after a while. well then, a little while after, she got bigger again, so i put him in, he had no interest at all for the female, i left him in for a good week to make sure, then took him out. yet a while later than that, she looked huge,s o i put him in, same deal. i couldnt figure out what was going on. so a couple months down the road, i put the male back in her enclosure to clean his tank out, then left him there for a day or two. they both stayed in the hide box. so i took it off of them, put the male back in his enclosure, and she went crazy. she was going nuts around her cage, slinging her tail around like mad, i couldnt figure out what the heck she was doing. then. she settled down an hour or two later. the next day, i came home from school, and the male was going nuts. and stayed that way for hours. i went in to check on the male at around 6:25, and he was still goin crazy, and i looked at my female. she had her tail in the corner, and i could see something slimy. i went to go get what i needed to clean her tank out, when i noticed her tail was in the air again, and something else came out. i noticed there were two little boas in thier sacks in the cage. i qickly scrambled to get a spare tub i have, a heating pad, and some damp paper towels. when i came back, there was a huge mess of little ones, and she was still going. heads started poking up, and my female looked pretty thin. after i was sure she was done, i took her out and put her in a separate enclosre to rest.(she was pretty nasty). i washed my hands and counted 19 live, one slug, and one little, i dont know what the heck it was. looked like a giant bean. i have lots of pictures to share. one little one did die. it was the runt, and considerably smaller, but all 18 are doing well. some of the little ones inherited the females saddles, which look pretty cool.

Nice litter! I think you are going to have to change your crawler at the bottom of the page to 1.1.19 bci, lol. That is cool that you were able to witness some of the birth. Have fun!

for the kind words. my next task is to either buy or build a rack. my female has eaten and is doing good. all the little ones now have absorbed most of thier yolk and are away from thier sacks, so i cleaned thier tank out. theres more contrast than what i thought.
quick question though... thier first shed comes in about a week correct? and what is the best way to sex them? i believe i will be finding a herp vet to either show me how to probe or pop them. i've even heard of some people looking for thier spurs at that size. is that possible?
thanks again everyone!

a couple of older pics of my pair before i moved them into some costum made cages.

Popping is good if you can do it properly. It takes some practice, and you should find someone either tell you or show you how to do it properly.

But another method that is "less intrusive" is to feel for small/little "BBs" in the male below his vent (the males hemipenes). I say "BBs" because that's the best I can describe them. Once you feel them in a male, you'll know what I'm talking about. Anyway, I'm hoping someone can explain it better, but here's what I do. Gently grab the baby at the vent (I use my index on the bottom side and my thumb would be on the top). Then slowly move your fingers down the tail, applying a little bit of pressure. In male babies, I'll usually feel those "BBs" no more than 1/2 inch (maybe less) from the vent. In female babies, you won't feel those "BBs" as you move your fingers down towards the tail. I believe this method only works for babies (but I might be mistaken with this as well). Please, if someone has anything to add I hope they do. I used this method to initially separate out babies and later confirmed the sex by popping, but if you do it correctly and are sure you felt those "BBs," you more than likely have a male.

Hope this helps. And please, someone correct me if any of the above is wrong or needs elaboration.

Congrats again on the litter.

They look so nice and it seems you have a pretty good relationship with your boas.

I remember when I had my first litter I was floored i was also a youngin 15. I can remember selling them taking my parents out for sushi and buying a PS2 with the profits it was one a mile stone in my life for sure.

Congrats again!

more young breeders. I just had my first litter earlier in the week, I'm 18. I had bred Rough Scaled Sand boas when I was 15, the most exciting point of my life to see those little heads pop up early Saturday morning of May 1, 2004.
It's cool you got to see them born as well.

Man, I wish I had the foresight to get into boas when I was a teenager. I didn't get totally into boas until my mid-20s, but I haven't looked back since. Great job on the babies. Can't wait to see some post-shed pics.
