Can anyone identify?

HittoriHanzo May 05, 2007 12:52 PM

Can anyone positively tell me a common and scientific name for this lizard, I'm thinking I have to have one, the photos were taken at the Arizona Sonora Desert Museum and labeled as a Chuckwalla, but I'm fairly certain it's not. Thanks for any input. I think it may be some type of iguana but I can't find anything that it looks like on-line.
Regards

It's gorgeous! Looks to me like Genus Sauromalus which is some sort of chuckawalla.

Sonoran Spiny-tailed Iguana, Ctenosaura hemilopha macrolopha.

They are not native to the United States but a breeding population exists on the grounds of the ASDM. I have also heard of established populations in isolated locations around the Phoenix and Tucson areas. The Black Spiny-tailed Iguana, Ctenosuara similis, has been introduced in Florida.

Thanks, I've been able to find a little more about them. Are there any iguana breeders that would have hatchling/juveniles this season that you know of?

There are some ads in the classified section as we speak.

I saw the Black Spiny Tails, but I'm interested in trying to find a CB Sonoran, Were you saying earlier that they are wild in the Phoenix and Tuscon locations or someone was breeding them there?

The iguanas at the ASDM property are established from a release in the 1970's. Back in the 1980's a herpetologist friend in Arizona told there were some established (wild) colonies in the Phoenix and Tucson urban areas (in some parks). I do not have any more information on this but Arizona F&G might be able to help. I do not know of any breeders but I believe they do pop up in the pet trade on a regular basis. A little ways down the list of Lizard Forums is a forum Cyclura & Ctenosaura, dedicated to Rock Iguanas and Spiny-Tailed Iguanas.

Thanks again, I'll inquire in the other forum to see if I can possibly find a breeder and/or how hard it is to acclimate WC juvies.
