He does look alot different..if you look closely in the new picture you can see that the gray outline is being filled in with yellow, and the spots are fading. He also has gotten alot of carrot tail (compared to not having any when I got him).

That's not a carrot tail. That's just normal orange at the base of the tail. A good number of leos develop that. It's normal.

Either way...she is a pretty high yellow abberant. At least judging by the pics you posted.

thegeckobarn Aug 15, 2003 05:30 PM

Never said he was a carrot tail, I said he has some carrot tail..meaning he has carrot tail genes. He has alot more now than in that recent picture...that was taken about 2 weeks ago and hes gone through another shed and got even more.

"He also has gotten alot of carrot tail (compared to not having any when I got him)"
How does that imply that he has the genes? Orange on the base of the tail is normal. It in no way implies that the animal had carrot tail parents or genes.

Here's a pic of my high yellow girl. Her parents are not related to any carrot tails.

If I had a pic posted online I could show you how my $20 PetCo gal turned out...She has even more orange than the one I did show you on her tail.

And the link I'm providing has my true Carrot tail in it. She's the one on the right. The one on the left is a $25 tang.

Well...
If it was just showing it off... try not to represent it as something it's not. Particularly since you are breeding and selling leos. While you may not be breeding this one in particular, people might question your other leos,

I didn't really mean any offense. It's just tiring to see people pawning off leos as sonething they're not. You have a great looking, healthy leo. Don't try to make it better than it is with maybes.

thegeckobarn Aug 15, 2003 07:24 PM

I didnt mean to sound rude either..you may have taken what I said wrong.
Carrot tail itself is a gene..im not sure if it is a recessive gene..but it is a gene. And all I said is that he has the carrot tail gene. If he didnt have the gene..he wouldnt have ANY orange on his tail.
Now my understanding of carrot tail may be different than others, I understand that most people consider the orange carrot only if it has alot..to me that really makes no sense. Amount should have nothing to do with the color. So just to make it clearer, im calling it carrot, when I guess some ppl would call it orange.
So..just to sum it up, I wasnt representing him as a carrot tail...I was just saying he has some carrot on his tail.
I dont know much about recessive genes though, so Im not going to say whether carrot tail is recessive or not. All I know is that all of the females and males with atleast a bit of carrot on their tails that ive bred have produced babies with it also, but I would in no way call them 'true' carrot tails.
And in my understanding, no one has proven whether it is a recessive gene or not, so I guess no one can say.

That leo you posted has the gene..or else she wouldnt have any

Carrot tail is a line bred trait. It's just like tangerine and high yellow. There is no 'het' babies like there would be with a recessive gene.

And the orange on the tail doesn't mean that it's carrot tail or has any carrot tail genes. Orange occurs naturally on the base of the tail, even in normal leopard geckos or wild caught leopard geckos.
The definition of a tangerine leopard gecko stated they must have 'orange pigment anterior to the tail base' meaning orange color forward of the tail base. This was published in the leopard gecko manual. That's from 1998. Carrot tails are a relativly new morph acheived through line breeding parents that Hine obtained from the wild.I think they were established around 200 or so...I may be wrong on that.
This actually a pretty interesting topic. But just cause the orange is there doesn't mean it's related to a carrot tail.

thegeckobarn Aug 15, 2003 08:19 PM

yes, you are absolutely correct. I was just informed that 'line bred trait' would be a better way to put it, my bad.
But me saying carrot, is basically my way of saying orange .
He is not a carrot tail.
