I have a terra cotta hut where I put a plastic lid and a moist paper towel on top of the lid, inside of the hut. I just make sure that the paper towel is moist everyday. It does the trick, and it's inexpensive. Some people prefer a more natural aproach and use moss.
I use small Rubbermaid containers with a hole cut out on the lid or you can cut the hole on the side. I use paper towel inside because some of my geckos like to use their humid hides as their bathroom too so it's easier to clean. The only draw back with paper towel is it dries out so you will have to mist it everyday to keep the humidity up.
Hide boxes are for when the leo sheds, it helps it. But I have heard that you don't need it, but I have one anyways and i just wet i when i feed them.

They aren't as important as people make them out to be, I don't use one for my leo and she sheds fine every time. Although I do spray her and the area around her to help her out a bit when she is shedding.

Even when they're not shedding, leos will spend time sleeping in the humid hide. I keep two in my tank (one with peat moss, another with wet paper towels) and they use both of them. Not all of the time, but usually in the morning.
