5 baby hogs

reptileszz May 06, 2007 05:42 PM

Hi all, my hognose eggs hatched 2 weeks ago and so far as yet the babies have not eaten. I am not concerned yet. I plan on getting a toad for scenting this week. I have only tried to get them to eat frozen thawed thus far. What are the chances they will go for live?

Thank you.
Carole

PS I am not new to hogs but have only bred sporadically. My last clutch was in 2004 and I only had 2 eggs hatch. They both eventually ate but I dont remember the circumstances. I know my female ATE the eggs last year as I saw 2 eggs in there, left her alone til morning when, alas, there were NO eggs.

Yes, many will eat live pinks. For some hatchlings the movement helps get them interested. In fact some hatchlings will respond to a wiggled or dangled pink better than a still one. Unfortunately though, some others will be terrified of the big giant hand and that method won't work for them. Forceps might help in those cases.
Personally, I wouldn't resort to the toad-scenting just yet.

Hi, thanks for the reply. I will attempt a few more frozen thawed before I go live. And I dont have a toad presently so scenting is not really an option right now. If it comes down to it I can fine one outside and keep it for scenting purposes.

Thanks!
Carole
