Albino Black Rat Question....

jdmartin Aug 14, 2003 06:40 PM

Are albino black rat snakes cross-breed with something else, or are they 100 percent black rat? Do they normally grow as large as a normal black rat? Thanks

I'm pretty sure that they are 100% black rat. You don't have to mix breed a snake to get an albino.

I'm also curious. Do albinos reach 6 feet in length?

"Albinism" (actually amelanism) is the most common mutation that occurs in almost all species. In black rat snakes, it occurs in two forms. There are tyrosinase-positive amelanistics, and tyrosinase negative amelanistics.

As far as growth is concerned, I've not noticed any difference between the average growth-rate of albinos as opposed to normals. in fact, one of my albino babies is the largest baby of her clutch (from two normal het amel parents). I know of no reason why they shouldn't grow as large as normals, since other than colour all their genetic makeup is the same. Seven-ft or longer isn't uncommon, and the published record is 102-inches. My 17-yr-old male is over seven-point-five ft.
