I know this is a bit of a long-shot, but I've had a male O. apodus for over 4 years. He is huge, well over 3 feet long and in great condition. I've finally found him a healthy female to live with, and they are getting along famously. These two are supposedly guaranteed to be a male and a female, but I'm curious to know exactly how you differentiate between the sexes. He has a larger head proportionate to his body, larger and more distinguished facial features, is considerably larger than her, and appears to be more "full" in the cloacal region. She is smaller all around than he is, but is proportionally chubbier bodied, has a dainty little head for her size, "softer" facial features, and her cloacal region is flat, if not slightly concave. Are these reliable ways to determine gender? He seemed fairly stimulated when I eventually released her into his cage, but very gentle with her thus far.
They both are definitely adult size, so I assume they have breeding potential. Are there any things in particular that I should do to encourage breeding behaviour? I've heard that they can be bred in captivity, but I don't know anyone who has done it. Anything in particular I should look for? I would love to be able to help this species by breeding them in captivity, and I love these animals, soany and all information will be appreciated!
