I was given a izzy from some people and it was in bad shape. They had it "living" in a 10 gallon tank, no light or heat soure. They won it from a fair!!

Once I got it I put it in a 55 gallon,but....... one of my 3 year old friends went into the room it was in and took it out of the tank! MY cats got him!! Took him to the vet, he lost his tail and a toe.He is healed and in a child proof home.

My question...... its been about a month and its tail is growing back already, its grow 3/8 of a inch. Its black, will it stay black? I know it will never be the same.

The vet said its very small going by the age the previous owner said it was.

But at least I got it away from them, its on its way to better and heathy life.

The first ig I ever encountered was a 6 foot male, tamer than most dogs I've known. He had a regrown tail, lost it at a few months old. You could only tell because there was a lumpish looking area. My experience has been, that given long enough, and as long as it is healthy, the tail will eventually restore the color, though it may never be as long as originally, depending on how much was lost. Hope this helps!

From what I know, igs who lose their tails when they are very young can regrow them with the normal colors and striping coming back. When they are older, they grow back black, and later turn to a solid beige-green color (that varies), but do not get back the stripes or spikes. So it's hard to say how the tail will turn out in this case.

Anyway, what kind of set up do you have Izzy living in now? A 55 gallon tank is okay as a temporary housing solution, but an ig will outgrow a 55 galon tank very quickly! It's amazing how fast they can grow when they're babies.

Thank you for the advice Kate

The 55 gal is a temp home until my husband can build him a better one (if it ever stops raining!!) He has plenty of room for now, like I said he is only 6 inch now ( since he dropped his LONG tail)

My iguana number 2, THOR, dropped his tail when he was 11 months. His tail regrew. On the beggining was black and looked like leather. After a few months it became light beige but without the scales and stripes. The new tail's skin looks like the legs of a tortoise!Rough but without scales!
