Leopard Frog Housing Advice Wanted

kc27 May 06, 2007 10:43 PM

I have a single Leopard Frog (1 year old) in a 10 gallon aquarium with half of the tank "land" consisting of mediume size gravel/stone and 1/2 of the tank with 4" of water. I've got a light in the tank that is on for 12 hours a day.

I'd like to add some plants to the gravel side of the tank. The local garden center had these plants available: Neanthe Bella Palm, Rosey Maidenhair Fern, and ficus carbernet (rubber plant).

Are these plants good/safe to use? I was just planning on removing them from their pots and planting them in the gravel.

Any advise would be appreciated.

All of those plants are fine. Ferns grow great in tanks. I have them in my woodhouse enclosure, also my greenback enclosure. You might try and find some African vine. Provides great cover and grows extremly fast.

Thanks - the tank really doesn't offer any cover other than the java moss in the water half. Want to offer some cover on the "dry" side, too and make it look a little more natural looking rather than a barren flat of gravel. I'll check out the African vine you mentioned.

Yeah, Wal-mart, Lowes, any place like that will sell them. Im not sure of the scientific name, but it is great, grows incredibly fast. And it's non toxic...if the crickets were ever to eat it or whatever. Also you might try African violets...the flowers make the take look nice, but they provide nice cover also. Good luck.

I dont know how much a rubber tree is going to like ebing that wet, but the worst thing is it dies and you rip it out, so if you don't mind that go ahead. I would look for a rush or a sedge, they arent as avalible as some other things (like vines from africa or whatever), but some of them are much better suited to a tank like yours.

good luck.
