POSSIBLE EYE INFECTION.......help

BIGDADDYBOAS May 07, 2007 01:18 PM

Hi, just noticed one of my smaller snakes had a problem with her eye that is a possible infection. She just shed 2 days ago but I have never seen an entire shed come off perfect and a small patch stay only on the eye. The other eye is fine but the right one seems to be developing a problem. It looks as though it has a cover on it that is hardened. Has any body else had a similar problem and what could be some possible remedies. It is a very small snake so I am a little worried. thank you for your help in advance.

sorry for the double post mods, i just wanted to get it in the two main snake forums. thank you

I'm sure you'll probably get the same advice elsewhere, but there probably is nothing wrong with the eye. The reason it looks messed up is probably just the eye cap drying out and wrinkling.

It's kind of hard to tell exactly what is going on from your picture.

It is highly unlikely that a full scale infection would develop in the two days since the shed. The best way to remove the eye cap is to soak the snake, or apply saline solution to the eye and let is soak in for a while to really soften the eye cap, then gently rub it off with a soft cloth.

I hope this is helpful I bet your snake will be fine.

I too would go the soaking route first, then you could try a little vasoline or antibiotic ointment! I too don't think it's an infection but the ointment will make that cap soft!
