Long distance move with Bearded Dragons?

slw33 May 07, 2007 02:16 PM

Sometime in the not too distant furture, I'll be moving, about halfway across the country (1600 miles or so). Its about a 22 hour drive, that I'm planning to do in either 2 or 3 days.

I've never moved such a distance with my dragons. Anyone out there have words of advice?

if driving, get a converter to change your cigarette lighter into an outlet socket and you can use heat lamps on them for the trip. you can put them in a 10 gal tank (each) for the drive and they'll be fine.

well people ship dragons in shipping boxes and thats overnighted they spend around 15-20 hrs in a box so im sure a move wont be that bad. id say just put them in a 10 gallon or even a box, if its cold then a heat pack wrapped in newspaper. if you use a box, then put shredded newspaper in there as well. they will probably just go to sleep most of the move anyways.

If you just put each one in a shoe box, they'll sleep almost the whole trip. Just set them up and feed them as soon as you get to your destination. Check on them every now and then to be sure they haven't pooped in the box. Maybe give each one a pinkie before you go and be sure they are hydrated well. Keep them at a temperature range of 60-70. I've moved three times and my dragons did fine.

The night before you leave, box up the dragons in either cat carriers, or rubbermaid containers. Don't include any lights etc in the boxes. They will sleep in the box over night and during the drive. In the hotel room or wherever you plan to stay over night, you can take them out of the box and let them bask and give them water only. Pack up before going to bed so they are ready to leave the next day. Once at your final destination, set up their cages and put them into it, give them a few hours to heat up and offer food then.

Healthy adult dragons can go 2-3 days without food without any problems. Hatchlings or dragons under a year old shouldn't be kept long without food, 24 hours should be fine.
