WTVC (Chattanooga, Tennessee) 30 April 07 Snake Bites Hixson High Student
A Hixson high school student spent the day in the hospital after a snake bit him. Hixson High's principal says within a minute, the news spread throughout campus. The sophomore told his principal he was walking from this brick building to a portable classroom. On the way, he says he dropped his pencil under one of these bushes. When he reached down to get it, the snake bit him, but the student says he didn't see him.
Police say the school did a very good job of reacting to this unusual emergency.
Principal Eddie Gravitte explained, "We had a student who came to the office and reported a snake had bit him. He had two puncture wounds on his arm, so we immediately contacted 911 and the boy's parents and called one of our teachers who is an RN and she came to treat him."
An ambulance transported the sophomore to Memorial North Park hospital.
Principal Gravitte says a small amount of venom entered the boy but it is not known what type of snake bit him.
Animal control and police officers thoroughly searched, but found no sign of the snake.
