Question concerning insecticide....

Kinglvr May 07, 2007 08:39 PM

Hey everyone, I have a question and I hope to get the answer I'm looking for, because it has been concerning me. My dad sprayed the basement (which is my room)about 2 weeks ago w/ insecticide spray to prevent bugs from entering our log home. He didn't spray my room itself, but in the unfinished part (which is seperated by doors obviously) and outside of the sliding glass door leading out of the house. You could still smell it quite strongly in my immediate room though. Will this cause harm on all of my reptiles?

I'm especially concerned because both of my snakes haven't pooped very much if at all in a while (they haven't had any problems before, I've never changed the conditions) and one of my bearded's is having problems with it's eyes. They're always closed. I'm thinking that's related to an infection, so.... what do you guys think?

my answer would be yes, theres probably a problem. if they were fine before, and now have problems, then yea something with the insectacide is probably bothering them. id get them to a vet asap to be sure. i hope you havent put them anywhere they could have gotten contact to the stuff. if not its probably the fumes bothering them and that still isnt good

IF you still have the bottle of insecticide laying around, it wouldn't hurt to give them a call/email. Crack a window to ventilate. I would also worry about yourself being exposed to the insecticide. Maybe your dad just thinks that you are a pest...lol just kidding.

If you can smell the insecticide spray in your room where your animals are, they can too and they are also inhaling the same fumes etc. I suggest getting all your animals out of the basement till the fumes/smell vanish completely. A vet check for toxicity on all your pets is a good ideal too. Bring a sample of the actual spray used, as this will help the vet to know if the toxic compounds are built or building up inside your animals.

Fumes can definitely irritate the eyes and cause unusual neurological symptoms in reptiles, just as toxic poisoning can do to any animal. I also hope you don't have any of the insects you feed your dragons exposed to that spray, as that can kill the insects and if it doesn't the same poison can get into your dragon's when they eat those insects.

Have to agree its a nice cage, same concern though that looks like alot of lights. Ive tries using mercury vapor and found them to be a waste of time. they dont get hot enough from a distance and cost alot. I just use a regular 60 watt flood light close up in the cage and a uv flourecent if you are concerned about uv. I keep the cage mostly closed up and the temps in the cage stay constant at both ends. It just seems like that many lights are not needed and a waste of electric. In the pic I put the night light in when I first built it but dont use it.
