wild caught flame side eastern

facingthewall May 07, 2007 09:47 PM

Check this guy out, caught him last summer and got him onto pinkies. When I was younger (like, in the early 90's, when nobody had these) I caught one and thought, "Hm, neat... too bad garters will never be popular, this could be genetic!"

He shed twice before hibernating and once since hibernating and has gotten brighter and more orange every time. I'm going to breed him to a huge female I've got from the Adirondacks where eastern garters grow LARGE and hopefully I'll have some large, flame side easterns to distribute! I'll try and get some better pics soon, he's out of hibernation now.

Here's an old shot of his side (again, not a great shot, but best I could do at the time).

Here are some shots of one of those Adirondack garter snakes. Yes... she's gravid, very gravid. And very large. A few inches over four feet, she was hard to get to sit still enough to measure... I really like the red/purple hues that these garters have.
