Remember when I said all my FF were dying?

trinacliff Aug 14, 2003 08:12 PM

Well, they're all dead. Four vials worth...I got to use the initial FF's that were in the vials, then I waited and waited for the new ones to hatch...they finally did, then I had tons for a short while. I was happily feeding them, and then I noticed that there were lots of dead ones in there...now they're all dead. I thought the media would at least last long enough to feed the second batch of FF's that hatched. I got these FF on Friday, July 24th...it's now three weeks later. I did everything that it said in order to keep them...room temp., no direct sunlight, take cap off/leave foam plug in for air...etc. Did I do something wrong? I'm just going to have to learn to culture my own...so I can have several going...but, sheesh, this is frustrating.

hmmm...I think most places say they should last about a month (that's with regular feeding to keep the population down). I have found the hydei to be not as prolific as the smaller ones but I think it is mainly due to longer cycle. I sent you an email with some info including the gross thing I did by picking out the larvae from the medium with forceps - eww!. I can ALMOST guarantee you that there were viable larvae in the medium. I put my cultures in front of the a/c to keep them cool and not cycle so quickly! Who did you get them from - reptilefood.com? I would email them and see what they say. I have found them to be great to deal with.

OR you got a sucky batch!!
