Sometimes and I don't know.
Last year my amel accepted food after her pre-lay shed. This year she did not. I think she has more eggs in her this year, which would be incredible since she laid 12 last year.
I have no idea if a male would try to copulate with a female about to lay, but I wouldn't see any point in trying - it should be obvious if she is gravid. Lower portion of body will be much bigger.

It is even more obvious now (13 days after shed - still hasn't laid)

My answer would be yes to both of your questions..
You should offer the female a meal after her shed.. If your not planning to double clutch this year then keep them separated as they will usually lock up again.
