Our first red sided skink was a rescue. Someone didn't like him/her and dumped it off at a pet store. We got a call.
She/he was skinny and scared. We hardly saw it for days - but the bugs disappeared. We used mostly orchid bark and some coco fiber for the substrate - placed some logs, live plants and a water dish in the tank.
When we approached the tank to drop in food - it would disappear so fast, it was amazing! However... it finally figured out that we were the source of his/her meals. So the skink would peek out from behind the logs or leaves to see us put bugs in. The skink would dask out and grab the bugs (roach or cricket or silkworm) and disappear again.
Now... six months later, he/she eats from our fingers. The skink figured out that we were the food gods - so everytime we approach the tank - the skink runs over to see what we have for her/him. It only hides when it sleeps now. Stays out most of the day too, loves to bask on the log under the lamp.
One of these days, we will find a mate for the now fat red-sided skink (mabuya perrotii).

Good luck!
