More OT - Rosy boas

miloradovich May 08, 2007 03:05 PM

Not sure if any of you are into rosys, but they happen to be one of favorites. I love the variety of looks and colors you can get from all the different localities.
Right now I am in the middle of my rosy breeding season. Over the weekend I found 8 differnt pairs of my rosy boas locked up. I think that is a record for me to have that many snakes breeding all at the same time. Anyway I was pretty excited and rushed for the Camera.
I was downloading them to the computer today so I thought I put up some rosy breeding shots for "Off Topic Tuesday"

First up is a male het ghost San Felipe to a ghost

Second is a male albino het snow to a DH

This pair is a normal pair of White Waters with no hidden genetics but he is a super aggresive breeder.

I've got plenty more but you get the idea.

The ghosts are real neat. This should be my first year producing them if all goes well. I have two females ghosts that I am trying this year. Besides just the strict locality stuff, if which there is a huge variety in color, I am also really into some of the looks that you can get with the rosy morphs. The pics below show a snow, albino, anery and normal all from the last year.

Thanks, they are great to work with. Especially now that we are seeing some of the designer morphs.
I aslo have rubber boas which is the other North American boa and also under rated in my opinion. Rubbers were actually my first litter ever even though I had been keeping other boas longer. It amazes me how resistant to cold they are. They have been found active in light snow and my first year hibernating them I had to put them down to 35 degrees to get them to stop moving around. I started at 45 and couldn't belive that they were still active.

Are you hooked yet? I started with a trio of golden eye albinos and a het and just had to get some of the other localities. Now I am up to over 50 rosys and still have a big wish list for more.
That is a nice looking Triv Triv by the way. Any breeding plans for it? Rosys are cake to breed as long as the conditions are done right.

I *so* want to take a shot at breeding them eventually... rosies are way more fun than KSB's, who I find a little bland. I mean, they're fun lil stubbsters, but rosies are more interesting, and they're native, which is always fun...

I need me some of them, with all the locality animals available, makes deciding tough, almost purchased some lindberg (ssp?) strain albinos, all the rosies are neat little snakes. Thanks for sharing.

Deciding on which localities can get tough sometimes. I've got a friend who has been building a group of Arizona and Mexican locality animals. I've got 50 or so rosys and not a single thing from Arizona yet so that is part of my wish list.
The Limberg albinos are real nice animals. They get the biggest of most of the rosies. Coastals also seem to be hardier feeders than some of their desert cousins. I've got 2.2 albinos that came from Randy Limberg last year and a 1.3 group of 04 hets. The hets would have been ready to go this year but I didn't brumate them at all. I figured I'd give the females some extra time and wait for the albino males to be ready so I get 100% hets instead of 66%.
I would really like to get some Limberg anerys and get in early on the Limberg snows. With any luck there are a couple of guys who should be producing some for the first time this year.
All my snow group animals are from Borrego and White Water stock.

My girlfriends Rosy has gone about 5 months without eating, we've been able to force feed her a pinky about a month ago, and a week ago we got her to take a Lizard (by force)

Rosy's are cool but thise one has made my life difficult.

Nice snake

That sounds odd. I have never had a problem feeder rosy. What are you conditions like? Temps, substrate, hides, ventalation, ect?
Mine do not get fed during brumation of course but otherwise are all strong, resposive and agressive feeders, including the few wild caughts that I've had. Even newborns take me at most 4 weeks to get feeding and most are sooner.

I know how frustrating poor feeders can be though. I have a majority boas but also a few ball pyhons which are extremely finicky eaters.
I also had a litter of rubber boas born in September of 2003 that did not take thier first meal until October 2004. Talk about stressfull. I tried everything I could think of with those. Finally got them on newborn pinks that still had blood and birthing fluid on them. After that first time they ate fine.

Im pretty damn sure its more then husbantry, i've kept her well and hell they're supposed to be easier to keep then BRB's. She wont even Take food if she is reflux fed, she fights it tooth and nail. Im getting a Stool sample done ASAP, She had mites and then went off food. She might be seeing a vet soon.

The real bummer is that its my girlfriends first snake (we live together) and she takes these things very badly, she basically feels extremely guilty.
