Can bearded dragons be kept with collared lizards?

carrot99 Aug 14, 2003 08:53 PM

I have one bearded dragon in a 65 gallon screen enclosure. I am wondering if I could keep a collared lizard with the bearded dragon without any aggression problems.

Beardies will fight and hurt each other, very seriously , they could really do damage to a collared. Also Beardies could make a meal out of a collared very easily.
Beardies are also notorious for carrying a certain bacteria, that is easily passed to other reptiles. Temperatures for collareds can be alittle warmer than for beardies also. For collared it is 100- 105 for basking but 90- 95 in the rest of tank. For a bearded dragon you would not want the cool side that hot !
I personally would advise against it ! Just get yourself a tank for the collared, and keep him healthy. Hope you make out okay, I do have collareds and a beardie, so I was talking of something I know. Take care, Eve

It would be a pretty expensive Beardie dinner. Smaller lizards are somewhat natural prey for Beardies so I would not keep them together, I have to agree with Eve. In general mixing species of lizards or herps in general is a bad idea. Ususally, and if not always, they have very temp/food/health requirements not to mention many lizards eat smaller lizards in the wild. Also what is often a normal and/or harmless parasite or flora in one lizard can be harmful to another. In short, it's just a bad idea. You have shown that you are a responsible herper just by asking. So many unfortunate people find out the hard way and loose a pet in the process. Cheers to you!

Beardies are very cool though, I have two "Angus" and "Irwin". Pics on the website.

I took my collared out and brought him to the glass of my female beardies cage to introduce them (the safe way). I was shocked! She tried to attack him through the glass! And she is the sweetest reptile I own. Do not put them together unless you want to give your beardie an expensive snack.

Just my 3 cents.

Isn't it cool how so many lizard lovers have multiple species. They are kind of like RITZ crackers, you can't have just one! Most reptilian type folks I know have at least three species. I guess just because there are so many awesome animals out there. Beardies always seem to be on the list too Just an observation from an old hippy dippy lizard keeper; never mind me

I have atleast 7 different species of lizards and frogs, each is unique. Funny once you have the LOVE, you do want to be around new species to learn what they are like. It is never boring. Always learning, and just dang fun !!!! Expensive too, hehehhe LMAO Eve

...Oh, just the usual crap. Nina's computer got zapped by lightning, its dead, so I loaned her my laptop, & *POOF!* the touchpad/trackball are hung/stuck, ITS now a paperweight, ordered two new systems to build one for her, TA_DAAA! both motherboards are DOA, plan D, went back to make an old "emergency" 266 up out of junk parts, now it won't support the new modems...port/interrupt assignment issues PCI controller probs (with the only modems I have left that aren't fried) No USB for camera either. Ah, computers. Been at it since about 8:00 this morning too. LOL!!

They are a little skittish, but if you could handle it alot, he would tame down. They are cool, neat to watch, they like to climb limbs and love catching crickets and moths. And are quite newsy, always watching everything I'm doing, cute. Was the one you saw real green? If so its the male. The females are a duller grayish greenish, with some black little patterns. When they breed their young are born alive, very cool, ! Eve

You can't have just one Ritz cracker. LOL I have heard that the entire pop. of Beardies comes from a line of 100 or so brought to the US before Austrailia banned export, and are severely inbred, has anybody had any problems related to this?
