draybar May 08, 2007 06:53 PM

I got this little guy as a non feeder
after a couple of tries I got him eating.
Not the best shot but you can see he should turn out to be quite nice.

I ment that it should grow up to be a looker.

great satisfaction from getting non-feeders to eat and become nice healthy snakes!.....As you certainly know, many folks would not put any effort in getting problem snakes to feed, and would let them slowly starve to death, or would just throw them in the freezer to euthanize them!
I just went through a long bout a while back with a problem Honduran hatchling that at first, wouldn't eat anything,....so I kept him going on egg yolk through a syringe for a while til he hopefully developed some sort of feeding response!

Then he started eating brown anoles that were scraped on the top of the head with a knife to really make a strong scent!. I kept feeding him those for another month or so, but didn't want to feed him anoles for too long, so I wouldn't have too big a problem switching him over to scented pinkies.

After a while, I decided the time was right to rub a pinkie with a small piece of crushed anole tail all over the pinkie's face!...with a little piece of tail crammed into the dead pinkies mouth.......he took to it big-time!! and I did that for a couple more weeks.

One day, I thought the time was right to try an un-scented pinkie all by itself after not feeding the snake for about two weeks, so it would be good and hungry!,......well, I slowly took the lid off his cage so I wouldn't "spook" him, and held the dead pinkie in front of the opening to his hide-box..........and
he answered his front door with a big "BANG"!!.......and from that day on, he's been a good feeder ever since!

Here's a photo of him from about two months ago.

best regards, ~Doug

congrats on getting that beauty to eat. Good job
I have a few snakes in my collection that started off as non feeders. It took as long as three or four months to actually get them to start eating on their own.
I did a lot of force feeding to keep them going inbetween all the trick attempts.
It is great feeling of satisfaction to get them eating.
The little okeetee was a breeze compared to them.
I think the little okeetee had a eaten a few times and then stopped so he was sent my way and it didn't take long at all to get him back on track. He is eating fuzzies already.
