Cat gecko, Aeluroscalabotes felinus

dartboy May 21, 2003 03:37 PM

Hi,

Today arrived a couple of cat geckos (Aeluroscalabotes felinus ) in the reptile shop. These geckos are very beautiful! Anyone got info info on these little guys? About keeping, breeding, pricing.

Cheers

Just a quick qeustion for you, how much do they want for the cat gecko? I have been looking to get some but nobody has any online and i want to know how much they are? Thanks

Oh, yeah, the question. I've got a pair right now. They basically like it cool and humid, no need to heat them. A planted terrarium is a great idea but barring that they need plenty of hiding spaces and places to climb. They're not usually very active, but mine are fun to handle once in a while. The ones you got are probably wild caught, though, and I've heard they can be VERY delicate, so try to keep stress to a mininum. They will drop their tails, but they grow back.
My pair just laid eggs but I don't know if I found them in time.

Yep, they're WC and he wants $800 for the pair. Is that a good price or to much? Do they lay multiple clutches per season or not?

Thanks

That price sounds a tad high. My pair were LTC proven breeders from a cat gecko expert and I paid $250 for the pair. CB babies are worth $300 max, I think. Even with the pet store markup (which I understand completely), $400 each for fresh WC's seems like way too much, especially given their fragile reputation. If they were really well established (three months or more) and had been deparasitized or at least tested I'd consider paying that much.
I'm not sure on the multiple clutch thing, I was wondering that myself. I certainly hope they do! I guess I'll find out. Two eggs a year would be a depressingly small amount.
