Strange Poop?

kelz0429 May 09, 2007 07:19 AM

I am so concerned about my new gecko, George! I think all of my concerns stem from the fact that I bought her from an Expo and I always wonder how much stress those invents are for the animals.

In any case, I got her Saturday morning. She has been acting more at home every night but she still has not eaten, which doesn't surprise me. She had one bowel movement Saturday afternoon, which was a tiny, tiny bit more wet than I would like to see. When I woke up this morning, I found fecal matter that looks very strange to me. The feces is a bit too light in color and actually, I think, includes some of the bedding that was in her deli cup with her. There was also a small orange-ish color ball that I do not believe to be urates. I do no see any urates.

She was eating quite a bit of Rep-Cal last night, so that may have something to do with the strange texture, color. But the orange ball has thrown me.

Here are a few pictures:

I think this calls for a bath in the hot tub......give a good soaking or a few.

my geckos often pass urates that aren't pure white. And remember, the poops that they pass after a shed can sometimes be lighter and of a different consistency, because of the skin.

Well, tonight, she passed another bowel movement and, not only did it seem sort of painful for her (she spread her back legs and even arched her back a bit), it was made up of nearly ENTIRELY of these little wood-like shavings that were used as substrate in her deli cup at the Expo held together with what looks a bit like mucus.

I have never used a loose substrate, so I have NEVER seen anything like this happen. Clearly, her actually having passed some of this stuff indicates that she is passing it. Should I be concerned? I would give her a warm water bath, but I have only had her for 4 days and I am really afraid of further stressing her.

Have any of you had geckos to pass any substrate that they ingested?

Any advice is appreciated? Thanks! Pics below:

Dont be affraid to do it. Just soak her, thats the best thing right now and as long as its not to hot or cold it will be soothing for her.

How do you go about soaking a gecko? At what temp should the water be?

Thanks for your help!

What I do is just use the spare bath room sink. I put in some bath water temp water, then I slowly after a few minutes put in warmer and warmer water, I never went as far as messureing the temps so youll have to just go by touch. Just base your instinct, and this may take a few soaks a day over a few days worth of time. It may also have passed what ever it had to at this point but just make sure and soak it.

My gecko is doing fine and has normal poops and when he poops he arches his back and throws his legs out. Exactly like you said, so I think that is okay, but that poop looks not normal to me..

Yeah,

It is definitely not normal--it is nothing but substrate and mucus.

I have not seen any fecal matter tonight--I am waiting.

Has anyone else seen a gecko pass substrate (not necessarily this particular substrate, but any kind of loose material)? Did it look similar to this?
