is hova bator overkill for blotchie eggs

lele May 09, 2007 04:06 PM

Hi all,

haven't been around for a while, but some might recall that I have a pair of side-blotched lizards (Uta stansburiana). Well, Ana has been little miss piggy and though I have not seen them mate doesn't mean they haven't done it - and I know they will continue til late summer.

I have had them for a year and of her 5 clutches last year only one egg made it and he died (in a bizarre way) at 6 weeks old. I had a little incubator set up in a small plastic container but had a hell of a time keeping the heat consistent. I recently won a $50 gift cert in online photo contest (of chameleon, not of me - lol!!) and thinking of spending the bulk of it on the Hova Bator ($39.95 - good price?) but I see it is rather large and wonder if it would be overkill for the 4-5 eggs Ana lays each time. What do you think? I'd like to have some success and get a few babies to survive.

it is the Thermal Hova Bator Incubator (18"x18"x9.5"

thanks!

"Hey, that's MY cricket!" (Ana has always been the dominant one )

I don't breed any other animals and don't plan to in the future.

If you would like youngsters from these two (pretty ) lil lizards then why would you consider the incubator to be over kill ya nut It would surley be worth the 39.00 something, to have the eggs hatch .
I know many make their own and that's what your referring to, but I find it much more easy/ and efficient to use the hovabator. The price you quote is about right, and the size well I just leave mine on top of a small dresser in my bedroom. Fits on a table top . Don't know which model your getting but most of us do not get the one with the fan, it tends to dry the eggs out.

It's up to you kido, but I would go with the hovabator. Congratualtions on the winning photo and the gift certificate, very NICE

Hey Eve! I knew you'd get back to me I guess what I meant on overkill was the size for a few tiny little eggs, but there does not seem to be anything smaller. The one I am looking at is:

Thermal Hova Bator Incubator

Hova-Bator is the Worlds Best Small Incubator and is the most economical, reliable incubator available. The radiant heat tube gently warms the inside of the incubator. The built in thermostat keeps the temperature steady. “THERMAL” Incubator Heated air flowing out the exhaust vents in the top of the incubator, draws fresh air in through the bottom vent. Ideal for almost all reptiles!
size: 18" X 18" X 9.5"

It comes from a company with 3 L's in their name (can you tell how paranoid I am about posting something to get me in trouble??? :-/) So it doesn't sound like it has a fan but that airflow is due to temps? Last year I had mites, shriveling, etc. and have plenty of other little things to take care of in the summer months (my caterpillars/moths) so I was pretty stressed. I can't complain about the price since it would actually be free!

You're right, ya never know what might come along, but unless Darwin or Cyrus do some sort of gender change.... However, I am thinking of studding out "the boys" but someone else will have to raise the little ones!

How are all your kids?? I peruse the KS forums occasionally, but not quite as often as in the past so not always up on new acquisitions and losses - hope you have had minimal in the latter.

Sounds good lele, I would get it, worth the money!
Cyrus will be proud of the decision you made to help bring little lizards into the world with his beautiful pic winnings,

How is the colorful fellow/ his eye?

I'm good been "eggstremely" busy lately. Lots of eggs incubating, hope all make out okay. I will be feeding a small army soon, LOL, At this point I'm out of incubator room with some more girls gravid, so I have to make some fast decisions myself in that area.

Dogies were a year in Jan so they are still young and all over the place, wanting to PLAY from sunrise to ... next sunrise, with no sleep, heheheheee. Life is GRANT

Talk later have to run, stick around.

I ordered it on Saturday, should be here in plenty of time

>>How is the colorful fellow/ his eye?

He's doing OK. His eye healed well and his range of motion is almost 100%. There is some site loss but he does this funny little head shake as an adjustment - it's cute. I was curious about the difference of vision so I held up Darwin on his "bad" side and he barely noticed, then took him around to the other and he got all big a puffy! It's funny because he SO rarely flares up. He is extremely mellow. Having a bit of a hard time with his grip (not MBD) due to some toenail loss from screen climbing as a youngster. But I have to wonder if they ever developed properly b/c he didn't do much more than Luna ever did and she had intact nails and a hell of a grip right to the end!

I can only imagine what your house is like. I know you are on the opposite end of NJ from where my bro just moved (Warwick, NY) but at some point maybe we can take a drive down for a visit.

WoW! a year already?? Glad they are doing well. What do you have for chams these days? How is sweet little coconut - and her babies??? Got pics

later,
lele
