HB 1309 passed...sad day

SalS May 09, 2007 06:08 PM

Well, I guess Texans need to start applying for permits. HB 1309 passed with only 5 nay's. At least the herp community was able to get changes made to only non-native venomous and the big 5 (interestingly they split out the 2 Af. Rock species).

thanks to everyone who tried.

So I'm wondering if the permit structure will be similar to that established in Florida....while it certainly has it's issues, IMO it is the best thing going in terms of venomous snake regulation. Ensuring that only qualified individuals (including qualified private hobbyists) possess and work with these creatures is important...

Hopefully, permit issuance will not be limited to only those with zoo affiliations or political connections. Anyone know how easy/difficult it's going to be to acquire and maintain a venomous permit? I'm considering moving to Tx in a few years and this most definitely has an impact on that decision.

Until then, I suppose I'm content to play with native Az crotalids...

HB 1309 merely passed the House and has only now been received in the Senate. Things can really slow down there, given the volume of legislation they are considering.

The wording of the bill seems to be leaving it up to the TP&W Commission to determine the actual requirements for the permits, which will be issued next year.
