A sad day in Southern California

IsisReptiles May 09, 2007 10:04 PM

Long time herpetoculturist and good friend Rick Trenney, of Renegade Reptiles passed away this morning after a long battle with cancer.

We feel very fortunate to have known Rick, and we will miss him very much.

"How sad it is to go on the next world without someone behind remembering you. I trust we will remember Rick."

I was going to call Rick today. I don't have the words. I am in shock. I knew he was sick and talked with him twice in the last few weeks but you can never be prepared.

You will be missed my good friend.

Prayers go out for Becky and family.

Rick is a great guy and very knowledgible and this a tremendous loss to the herp community. I knew that he was sick, however I didnt know this was going to happen. I never met him in person, however talked on the phone/email and bought numerous snakes from him in the past. He was the first guy I know to produce the 2 headed high white Des. Snow Cal king. My sympathy goes out to becky and the family. Dave Flanagan

I just read this sad news on the cornsnake forum. I never met Rick in person, but always new about Renegade Reptiles, and what quality animals they produced. Rick & his wife had some of the best photos on their website. The herp community just lost a huge asset to our hobby, and lost a good friend as well. God bless his family & friends.

It is a real tragedy. I did not know Rick personally but I have done business with him a handful of times. He was knowledgeable and professional in every way, and his animals were top notch. The colubrid community has lost an excellent man today.

Here is one of my favorite snakes. I purchased him from Rick in 2004.

the industry/hobby lost a real enthusiast, and a real pro. rick's word was as good as a signed contract, buying or selling. he will be greatly missed. kurt d.

Rick was a mentor to me many years ago. He introduced me to the Applegates and many more. I bought several cages from him and spent a lot of time at his house partying, learning and just hanging out. Since I moved away from San Diego I've only seen him and Becky once. The last two years I have been down there. Here's the last email I got from him.

Hey Joe,
Long time, no see!! What's been happening? Are you still doing snakes? I'm still fighting with this cancer thing and things are getting rough, so I decided to cut way back on the animals because I can't keep up with all of them. Now that I've sold off 2/3 of my collection, I should be OK. Thanks for the offer of help. I'll keep it in mind if I get in a bind....Thanks,
Rick

Thanks so much for posting the pictures of Rick!

The one at the bar was what Rick C., Rusty, and I (Glenn) always looked forward to after the shows. Hanging with our friends Rick and Becky. We were super fortunate to spend the time there with them. I will miss those meetings but look back in fondness.

It's really hard not to be absolutely heartbroken but I know Rick is now peaceful. We all know he is in a better place tending to his hogs, kings, and rats. No ball pythons!

Becky please know our hearts and prayers are with you.

To a great friend and comrade......

your friends,
Glenn, Rick, and Rusty

mexicanamak May 10, 2007 03:34 PM

I posted this in the Mexicana forum and need it to be here too...

I never knew Rick, but I knew of him and he indeed had an influence on the interests of my son and I when my son was just a young boy and we were first developing our interest in kingsnakes. His site was one we frequented often to drool over his second-to-none California Kings. I can honestly say Rick and his Cal Kings were the biggest influence in my son’s interest and me buying him his first Cal King. Unfortunately I didn’t buy one of Rick’s animals, although I do feel he was responsible for that sincere interest I noticed in my little boy that prompted me to buy him his first Cal King. My son still has that snake to this day and it’s always been his favorite serpent buddy.

Thank you Ricky… you made a difference, and it will be forever appreciated, you will always be remembered by many. Prayers go out to your wife and family for strength and courage in a very desperate time.

I've seen Rick and Becky at many a reptile show in So Cal, and have had conversations with both of them on occasion. Really nice folks, great Cal kings. Very sorry to hear of his passing.

Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

And you, my father, there on the sad height,
Curse, bless me now with your fierce tears, I pray.
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

I haven't posted for awhile, and am temporarily snakeless, I never knew him, but just hearing everybody talk about how great he was, makes me feel empty inside. I feel this bad being marginally involved, so I can only imagine what you fine folks are going through. My prayers are with all of you, and especially his family.
