Killing mites on wild caught lizards

SDeFriez May 10, 2007 09:30 AM

Not sure if this is true or not, but a friend told me that when catching lizards for snake food, freezing the lizards for three weeks kills the mites on the lizards. Truth or bunk?

When feeling a mite infestation, most snakes will naturally submerge, with only nostrils above water, into water. A 30-min soak will drown the mites. (Yes, most insectes breath air.)

I sometimes supplement feeding with live lizards or snakes. Mites are the least of my worries, but then one can always treat parasites with medicines. Easy way is to inject the medicine into a feeder mouse, live or dead, then feed to snake.
