Moving monitors

holygouda May 10, 2007 02:22 PM

I have decided to move from California to Florida. Anyone have any suggestions for the best way to transport a water monitor and 2 tegus? Looking to see if I should try to keep them warm, how should I take care of heating, humidity and feeding? They will probably be out of their normal cages for about a week. Thanks

The water and tegu are in the 3 foot range, the other tegu is a baby, and barely over a foot

Are you driving from CA to FL? If so, just load each in a pillowcase and carry in your car. It shouldn't take more than 4 days for the drive. You can smuggle them into the hotels (Super 8) and soak them in the tub to keep them hydrated. This is what we did, in January 2006, when we moved from CA to NC. We were carrying a 4' ornate, 3' argus, 2 leopard geckos (in a carrier), 2 birds (in a carrier cage), 2 large dogs, 4 cats, and 2 adults. What a trip! It took 4 days and no disasters in the hotel rooms - they never knew we had a zoo - HAHAHAHA. In Alabama, one cat got loose taking him to the room and he almost was road kill but it was like 2 in the morning and there was no traffic, but it did give us a scare! We made it to NC with no problems and quite excited to no longer be crammed in a station wagon for another day!
Good luck,

Unless your moving in the winter, I would not worry about keeping them warm. Heat kills, and unless you allow freezing, cold/cool does not kill.

When moving monitors, you want them to be at the lowest metabolism, not burning up energy.

Also, cars/trucks, etc, are heat generating machines. Cheers

I made the move myself 2 years ago and I moved 2 salvator marmos and 2 mertensi and I shipped them to myself. I thought it was the best way and the less stressful way for the monitors as well. IF you have the ability to do so I would do it that way. At this time of year where its hot and humid as you head to the southern states it might be way too stressful for the animals and kill them. I made my move in june and it was not an option to drive cross country and that was for me not wanting to deal with the heat.
