good pythons? ringeds/carpets/bredlis?

killr_silhouette May 10, 2007 08:28 PM

hey there everyone...i am interested in possibly getting a ringed python...they are beautiful animals...

i have been interested in getting a python for quite a while...

i can't decide what kind of python to get though, i want something that will get medium sized (not HUGE, like a retic...but not small, like a ball python)

i do educational programs, so i want something with a fairly good temperment...

i have been leaning more towards carpets, bredlis, and ringeds...

i'd like to get something decently priced...i love the way blackheads & womas look, but they are too expensive for me...

any suggestions/opinions on good pythons?

also, where is a good place to get a sub-adult/adult python?

i'd prefer to get a snake around 5'-7'...rather than get a yearling or baby...

thanks!

Can't speak for ringed, but I have a Bredli and a pair of Irian Jaya's, and ALL are total angels as long as food isn't involved- 100% trustworthy with my kids.

Both species make EXCELLENT captives, as well as incredible display animals, (both are semi-arboreal) and fit your size criteria.

I got my bredli from Nick Mutton (Inland Reptiles), and my Irian Jaya's from Yasser (Spitfire Reptiles)- can't go wrong with either of these guys!!! Not only are they known to have the best of the best, but they are extremely professional and knowledgeable, they're good on their word, and genuinely care for their animals.

I agree that carpets are great. I have a pair of jungle carpets that are very sweet. The only problem with Bredls and jungle carpets is that if you can find adults they usually are expensive. Irian Jayas can be found as adults a little cheaper but you have to make sure they are established because they probably are imports. I've never owned rings so I can't comment on them. If you don't mind a heavy-bodied snake bloods/short-tails are great snakes too. Good luck!

As much as I LOVE my Ringed pythons, I do not think that they would fit what you are looking for. Rings can be quite intolerant of quick movements and would/will strike quickly at little hands thrust toward them. They are simply not good animals for school presentations. Ringed pythons are also smaller than you are looking for. They are similar in length but MUCH slimmer than balls.

For the size and attitude you are desribing, I would lean towards a Jungle carpet. Impressive, but easy to handle, and very pretty. However, I would warn against buying an adult. Personally, I would never trust any snake, around any children, Unless I had raised it from a hatchling. - Brian
