My first Retic sighting

the4thmonkey May 11, 2007 10:41 AM

Sad but true ... here I am at Falcon Dam State Park in Texas, hoping to at least see a retic, and maybe even get some photos. Yesterday I think I did see a couple with binoculars from far off, but they were gone before I could get any closer. While leaving the park after sunset, we came across this unbelievably sad roadkill, what a pretty boy he must have been. He had not been there very long, he must have tried to run across the road right before the sun had set.

Oh man, I was there YESTERDAY! I heard Falcon was good for them, but I didn't see any there. I went even further south to outside McAllen and, long story short, spotted this nice girl on the dirt road.

I've been doing very well with finding my targets this year, both TX's "endemic" reticulatus--Coleonyx and Crotaphytus. Found the BB gecko a month ago, and now the collared. I better buy some lottery tickets!

>>Shes such a PRETTY thing just sitting there showing off for ya,

...and about twice the size of your typical collaris!

I passed her doing about 25-30 mph, realized what I'd seen, backed up and got two photos--she didn't move. I backed up further and pulled forward a little closer, and she ran straight up the road embankment and out of sight.

We were the nerds with huge cameras, tripods, sighting scope, etc. The only people without fishing poles and small children. We did have some luck the next day and what I hope will be some great photos. I am still on the road, but too far away to check out McAllen now. I'll have to remember that for next time. Seeing and photographing different collards in their natural habitat is a blast!

I have committed the terrible sin of spelling "collareds" wrong in my previous post. I hope I will not be kicked off the forum!

Before you ban me....I have a new lizard. He was named partially for where he came from ... the Railroad Mountains (This is near Roswell, New Mexico, but please don't ask me where. I have lived in this state my entire life, as has my father, and neither of us have ever heard of these mountains.) The other part of his name is in honor of Eve, because she is from New Jersey, and uses the Indian names a lot, and his name is a city in NJ. But mostly because I learned so much about caring for my collareds from her, she has even spent time with me on the phone during a crises. Many thanks to you, Eve. So he is named Hoboken, which came from the Indian term for "a pipe for smoking." He is Hobo for short.

He is by far the most amazing lizard I have ever owned. Not only is he fabulously colored, but was just caught this past Saturday and is the tamest collared I have ever seen. He sat in my hand for nearly an hour in the pet store with no squirming, then rode with me in the car, sitting in my hand, looking out the window. When the sun set, I made him a little place on the dashboard and he crawled in and slept the rest of the way home. Pictures to follow soon!

HOBOKEN, yes is well known here in NJ, And I knew the meaning too, loving the Indian names as you said. GREAT name, and a big CONGRATULATIONS. You have helped me too, just listening to me ramble about collareds, LMAO You were Fun to talk with.

I absolutely love the patterns of the New Mexico collareds, they are really unique, but I can never find one avaialble. I would love a pair from those locales. SOON.... LOL

Best Wishes with your new guy! And YEAH pics sooner than soon hunh , hehehehee !

You know what is funny, Eve? The man who caught Hoboken said the best and prettiest lizards he catches goes to a dealer in NJ. I'll try and find out who that is.
