New ridleyi, D/U warning

Chance May 11, 2007 11:48 AM

This little guy arrived yesterday and is quite the stunner. I've wanted to keep these snakes for some time now, and the opportunity presented itself so I jumped on it. By the way, I'll be looking for a female soon so if anyone has any clutches incubating, or has any spare girls they're wanting to move, let me know!

You know, it's almost eerie how mamba-like these snakes are. I've kept a few individuals of three of the four mamba species, and I've yet to find a nonven that was closer in appearance and actions. I think the only thing that is different (other than the fangs) is the threat display. I guess it makes sense, considering how closely related these snakes are to the elapids.

Anyway, enjoy the photos.

Checking things out

Temporary enclosure

First threat display! (Note: this snake will be displayed in a classroom, so this is not a behavior I'm going to encourage.)

Thanks for looking. If anyone has any ideas of his locale, I'd appreciate it. Also, if anyone has any general tips or advice about raising the little guy, I'd appreciate that as well. It seems that the posts about ridleyi are somewhat lacking on this forum.

sweet pictures man.

if he's anything like my friesi, caring for him will be a breeze.

don't let him get too hot. mid 70's on average i'd say. it was sweltering in my place (for the first time this year) the other day and the friesi did not dig it. just curled up under a rock for literally the entire day. usually he cruises around, climbs, etc.

I can't give you any great advice but I do like it. I'm looking to soon get some myself. I've handled a large 7' specimen at a show one time and it was very docile, not to mention incredible looking. I've also talked to guys who say they're more like blue's then taiwans with regards to temperment. Anyway, will make a great display animal.
