? on Spiders being somewhat retarded

jdmtyper May 11, 2007 04:05 PM

I picked up a really nice looking male spider he weighed in at 1600 plus grams and the owner was telling me that he has kind of a head bobble and seems to be a little slow kind of a mild retardation and said that all spiders are like this to a degree I have never heard of this has anyone else??? He seems to be in great health and is a proven breeder.

it happens with some spider balls not all of them i have a friend who breeds spiders who has never produced a bobble head spider i actually bought my female spider from him and she acts perfectly normal without any wobbling this is my first spider ball but a few things i have noticed about the spider morph is they seem to be very active mine is rarely in a hide box and they really seem to enjoy eatting i have also heard claims from people who breed spiders that they are very willing breeders as well so good luck with your new addition spiders are one of my favorite morphs and the combos are just amazing i have never seen a spider combo in person only in photos but i know with my spider photos do her no justice so im sure the combos are even better in person im working on making a bumble bee myself

Try using punctuation.

Thanks for the replies. My spider also seems very hyper active but it is a great looking animal. I am also going for a bumble bee right now too. I have collected quite a few morphs right now am excited to get going. Anyone else know anything about the Spider bobble head issues? Is it an undesireable thing in te spider morph? I actually somewhat enjoy it its very entertaining and seems to be a part of the snakes personality. It actually has made the spider seem alot more personable to me and the deal I got on it was way way too good to pass up.

Some spiders have it some don't - it also varies in degrees of severity from "cute" bobbling to a sick twisting thing. Since you are planning on breeding your spider be forewarned that you'll likely produce wobblers as well - and they may not sell as well. Out breed as much as possible.

Congratulations on your new addition and good luck!

how can one out-breed more than what's been done already. Who do you know that has bred spider x spider? I've never seen a spider that didn't exhibit the trait to some degree. Maybe it had the full on wobble, or maybe just a slight head tilt while crawling but they all have it. Perhaps the hundred or more spiders that I've seen over the last few years isn't a large enough sample to say beyond a shadow of a doubt, but I would bet that if someone looked long enough and knew what to look for, they would all exhibit the trait from mainly extremely minor to the occasional "spinner" (not the spider x pin combo).

Personally I believe that the "they all have it" theory was concocted by:

A. A breeder that wanted to shoot down the spider program
and
B. Someone that had a bunch of wobblers that they needed to unload

i was under the impression the head wobble came from a lot of inbreeding of spider by spider in order to produce some kind of super form...just thought i'd ad that

jdmtyper May 14, 2007 06:30 PM

hmm well mine is an 04 I am not sure when the morph was first made but from what I know about mine there cant be too many spiders in its family history but who really knows.

My spider shows no signs of wobble or head tilting that I can notice. He acts a little more curious than my other Balls. He eats like a garbage disposal, anything I throw in there is gone in a heartbeat.
My bumble bee is the same way as far as meals go. She's not as curious.
I'm going to breed my male spider to all three of my normal females. Hopefully I wont get any wobbles.
As far as being retarded ...I don't think so. Seems normal to me.
