17 year locusts....OK to feed a dragon?

blodisnut May 11, 2007 04:32 PM

I live in Chicago, and at the end of the month, the cicadas, or 17 year locusts return to the midwest. There will be millions upon millions of them.

There was an artical in the Chicago sun times regarding them suggesting that you not try to spray with pesticides, as pets and birds feed on them.

I remember my dogs eating them like they were popcorn, but would it be safe to feed it to my lizard? He does well on crickets, mixed greens, and fruit, but I thought since they would be everywhere for a few weeks to see if he can have a culinary treat, or if they may have some toxin to him.

Any and all advice would be great!

wild insects are not good to feed your lizards due to the insectacides they may come in contact with. it doesnt matter if you put it down, they may have gotten into some from somewhere else. i have not read anywhere that says they are good or bad for dragons, and unless you or someone else reads it somewhere, i would not try it, not worth the risk.

Also there is a higher risk of your dragon contracting parasites from wild caught insects.
