Egg question

viborero May 12, 2007 08:57 AM

Hello all. I have a question for you. Do female Collareds lay infertile eggs periodically, much like birds and some lizards such as Chameleons?

The reason I ask is that our female is very gravid right now, yet the last time she was with a male was last year, maybe 8-10 months ago. Copulation was never observed, and I know that doesn't mean it didn't happen, but had it happened would this be a case of sperm retention? I hadn't heard of that happening with lizards, only snakes.

Ok, so I asked two questions instead of one. Any feedback, help, or discussion on this one would be appreciated.

Thanks!!

Hi, yes females lay infertile eggs too. Just have to provide her with a laying area/nest so she does not become eggbound. Dampen a pile or 3-4 inches of sand in a corner or make her a nest.

They can also re-absorb their eggs, this happens when you notice them looking gravid, but they do not ever lay and remain healthy, and slowly seem to shrink down to normal size, and ya wonder * where the heck did the eggs go

** Yes they can (like snakes) retain sperm from a previous mating. BUT... in my opinion last season (8 to 10 months ago) would have been a long time to retain sperm. I would venture to say they are infetile if she's got eggs. Always wait for the outcome, and make sure they are not good though. (spongey/ soft, like water ballons) never firm get moldy or just cave in.

Any other questions you may have just give a holler, we will try and help. Glad your here, stick around. I have a collared care page , you may find some added info.

Thanks you very much for the reply! It sure set my mind a little more at ease.

I will treat the eggs as if they were good if they hatch and keep you posted.

Thanks again!

You have a lot of very COOL snakes, how about one day you post your collared pic and a few snake pics for us, we like pics around here.

Also you have many of the same lizards I have, lost my beardy awhile back, but I have a merauke large female BTS, many collareds, some chucks, and a central banded gecko. Many other species but those I think are a few of the ones you also have.

Yeah, be waiting for some pics Diego, hehehheee !
