How wet is too wet for incubators?

phiber_optikx May 13, 2007 02:19 PM

I have tried the equal parts by weight. That was still very dry. I tried the 5:1 ratio and that was too dry also. I have been adding a little water at a time to try and get it just right. One has quite a bit of condensation on the lid but not so much that it drips. Is this ok? it still doesn't hold its form perfectly when squeezing it though. Almost half of it still crumbles. I am using Perlite...

you don't want so much condensation that it drips.

Equal parts by weight is a good ratio. That has worked for my eggs. The squeeze test does not work for me.

As long as the eggs don't collapse you have enough moisture. I like to keep mine as dry as possible. This usually translates to a nice mist on the top of the container, and nice full eggs. As long as I see that I am happy. If I see large drop forming under the lid I shake off the lid and replace it until it's only a fine mist. If the eggs start to dent, then I add a little water to a corner away from the eggs. Just remember that the eggs may dent in a few day before they hatch and you don't need to add water.
