Dark Texas Rats in Louisiana

mfoux May 13, 2007 05:45 PM

Texas rat snakes are very common in Southwest Louisiana. I've encountered and captured dozens since my early childhood and they've all looked pretty much the same. In the past week, however, my brother and I have happened upon what appears to be a small, localized population of extremely dark individuals. They are not solid black. Rather they are very dark brown to black with some normal pattern showing through. They are not especially attractive, just different from the norm. Is anyone out there working with this type of color variation? Would this be classified as HYPERmelanism? We've captured two individuals in the same location, seven days apart. The first we released. The second is a four foot male covered in old scars and new wounds. He appears to be healthy despite the wounds--I believed they were inflicted by a feline. We are treating him right now and will most likely release him. I'll try and post some pics.

I don't know what the Louisiana laws are regarding the collection of indigenous herps(as kids, we just caught them and either released them or kept them as pets), but I may keep an eye on this location and consider breeding these to see what comes out. I wonder if they will continue getting darker.

Depending how far south you are in Louisiana, the Black Ratsnake ranges well into at least the middle of the state, more than likely giving some gene-flow to the Texas Ratsnakes in the area.
Although the Texas Rats certainly do sometimes get fairly dark, and rather drab looking, it is more than likely due to the influence of the nearby Black Ratsnake......also, under "normal"
conditions, the term "hypermelanistic" would describe the snake with accuracy, as would for example, an entirely black Eastern
Hognose Snake in certain populations.

Do you know of, or have ever caught any Black Rats from not too far north of that location?

best regards, ~Doug

Doug,
I think you may be right about the black rats in the mix, although in 32 years I've never seen one here. I'm located only about 45 miles from the coast.

Very interesting that far south. If you can get a picture, that would be nice.
.
BTW you need a LA fishing license to collect them.

Nice pics, Bill. The second and third look exactly like what we've always caught here. My brother has the snake right now; he's doctoring some lacerations. I'll probably see him this week and get some pics.
So, a fishing license...interesting. I'll get one before the next trip. Do you know of any restrictions on keeping/breeding after we collect?
I'm in Calcasieu Parish, btw. Near Lake Charles.

You may want to check "Reptile/Amphibian" section of your fish and game regs:
www.wlf.louisiana.gov/pdfs/fishing/Rec%20Regs%20PDF.pdf.
If you want to breed them to sell you may need a commercial license. Your fish and game folks are easy to work with and will answer your questions.

Thanks Bill. Still have all those pics.. just not on the web right now. In the future I hope to revamp that locality project with those photos plus tons of newer ones I've taken recently. Just have other things on the plate for now.
