FIRST TRIP OUT WEST THIS YEAR..........

alterna63 May 13, 2007 08:28 PM

really sucked! To be expected though unless you went to the Bend or River Road. Arrived into Del Rio late Fiday nightSat. morning, nothing happening on 277. Blew it off before I even got to the first picnic area. Temps around 67, winds out of the North. Saturday, went out to Pandale dirt, could only get to Harkell draw as the base of the concrete slab that stretches across was washed away. Rocks were piled up but too much for the Chevy Express van. Met Nathan on the road (boomslang2050). Only saw one other Herper from Tennessee on 90. Went toward Pumpville and back to Juno as nothing was happening. Road closed to the public, water standing, went to Bakers Crossing and went back to Del Rio. Highlight of the trip was eating lunch in Mexico with the family and having a drink with John Tedens and his wife at Crosby's. I hope it's better on Memorial Day. Oh yeah, I did see a porcupine on Juno road.

No mention of the deer? tsk tsk.
and no mention of the helpful messages I left on your answering service? I feel slighted.

Oh GEEZ!!! O.K.!!!! So I almost creamed a doe coming back on Juno Rd. She decided to stop at the last second which saved her as well as us from having to replaced the front of the "new" van that we haven't made the first payment on yet. and O.K. John, I don't want to slight you. Thanks for all the weather reports as I was out driving the roads looking stupid as I searched for the non existant alternas. I should have listened to your "go home" suggestion. Hopefully you will be there at Abeline dispatch over Memorial Day,.....or will you actually be out with us?

Made two passes from Carruthers to the tall cuts just north of the picnic area. Coming back to Carruthers after the first pass, found one DOR emoryi, so I made a 2nd pass up. Found nothing, didn't spotlight it back.

I went to lancaster hill and it was soaked.Water was coming out of the cut still.I never even saw a cloud in the sky.I then hunted my favorite cut which is on 2400 but the temp was falling fast.i didnt see a snake all weekend.

The cut on 349 just south of Sheffield and the one on 2400 were dry but the rocks were not heating up at all when we saw it about mid day last Friday. We ended up in the Gap, the temps were good, held up all night and we saw lots of animals. But no alterna were to be seen while were down there.

But that's beside the point Joe! Hell yeah I had a good time just being there. Just between you and me, I am in the process of planning to move out that way within the next few years. We are actively searching for property and keeping our eyes open. Kim and I have been talking about this. We have had it with this sh** hole called Houston. I have lived here much too long!
