Observed a tragic situation

Beyonder May 14, 2007 02:55 AM

Hi,

I was at a party with a friend this weekend. Anyway during the evening I wandered around checking out the house and I saw the guy living there had a beardie. It didnt look too healthy. The substrate was microscopic sand with alot of poop and other dirty stuff in it along with some small wood pieces (unsure of what its called in English..).

The tank was an aquarium, 110 liter. The animal had a small log and a heating bulb directly above this log. He could potentially burn himself on this!!! I saw no indication of UVB bulb. I saw one small dish of cucumber with some brown powder on it.

This disturbed me. So I found the owner and asked him what the deal was. He told me the beardie was 2 years old. But his size was about 30cm max and really really skinny. He said he had just had him at a vet because of some intestine problem (his intestines came out and the vet had to put it back in again).
He said he has no UVB light and he couldnt get hold of many crickets so he fed him cucumber. He said the temps were around 20 degrees C in the evenings and 35 degrees C in the heat spot.
However I couldnt remember seeing a thermometer.

I felt bad to my stomach. I tried to tell him that he feeds him wrong, that he needs UVB lighting and basically told him that he is tormenting this animal. He wouldnt listen.

So what the hell can I do??

I feel so sorry for this animal.

this is why i stopped breeding...too many people think they want a beardie and never take care of it. and also, this is why i try to talk others out of breeding.

there isn't too much you can do. You can get in contact with him during the day and tell him current care sheets and care info for bearded dragons (give him this website too). If he doesn't seem to care to improve his setup, you can offer to take the dragon off his hands (only do this if you are fully capable of providing all the proper care including vet appointments if needed). At 2 years of age he probably wont' grow much more length wise but you never know.

The only other thing is you can report him to the humane society for not providing proper care for the animal. However I don't know what they can do in this situation other than pay him a visit and inspect the conditions the dragon is in and ask him to improve. You can call or email your local humane society and ask what they can do in this situation.
